World Quaker Day is October 5. How shall we observe it? A question from Janet Leslie.
Something we've done in the past has been to take a photo of all of us present on that Sunday and send it to Friends World Committee with loving greetings and a note about who we are as a Meeting, for them to share with the Quaker community worldwide. We could do that. "Love your Neighbor" is the theme this year. In times when environmental crisis, conflict, untruths, and unfairness seem all around, let us see what Love can do, through both our words and our actions. In last month's newsletter, I shared some suggestions from Friends World Committee which included "Support our neighbors: Organize an act of service to address needs in our community, stand in solidarity with refugees or migrants, visit a local service group..." I doubt we're going to organize anything new for October 5th, but we're doing one already- organized act of service on that day (making dinner at the Shelter), we will have hosted the monthly Singing Circle a few days before, and some of us will be standing at the Peace Vigil on Saturday. I wonder what others may be doing, whether individually or as part of a group? I'd like to know and be able to include that in a message to our wider Quaker community (along with a group photo, I hope). So, on October 5, I plan to bring a basket and some slips of paper and invite Friends to write something about how we are practicing love for our neighbor.
